What is Military Science?
Military Science and the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) exist on college campuses to train and educate students who want to become leaders in the United States Army, or leaders in any profession.
Divided into a basic and senior courses, students learn leadership basics in the classroom and apply them during leadership lab sessions. Students receive hands-on technical and tactical training such as leadership techniques, military principles, military doctrine, land navigation, squad and patrolling tactics, orienteering, fieldcraft, team-building, drill and ceremony. The goal of Military Science is to educate students on leadership from a military perspective with an
emphasis on situational exercises and tactical scenarios. This allows students to actually practice leadership in dynamic and every changing conditions.
Qualified students who complete the program earn federal commissions as 2nd Lieutenants in the Army when they receive their bachelors degree.
All students, however, are welcome to take Military Science basic courses as general electives with no obligation to the Army.

We use tactics to teach leadership and small unit scenarios to develop critical thinking.
Individual leadership is evaluated, critiqued and assessed using a formal report that categorizes the traits common in effective leaders. Cadre and Cadets in their senior year of the program evaluate situational leadership exercises and provide individualized After Action Reviews.
Who is Eligible?
Military Science students participate in the program while they complete degrees in their chosen fields. Military Science courses can be used to fulfill social science or elective credit requirements. Any student with at least four semesters of school remaining is eligible to apply.
Do I Have to Join the Military?
Military Science is divided into two levels: basic and advanced. At the basic course level (freshmen and sophomores), you're under no obligation - you can withdraw from the program at any time and are not required to serve in the military. The basic courses are a great way to learn about the Military and how we view leadership with no requirement to actually join.
The advanced course (juniors and seniors) is restricted to those students who have contracted with the U.S. Army and f you choose to continue in the advanced course level, you are contracted - that is, you sign an agreement to serve in the Army upon graduation. After graduation, you are commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, and you can choose either to serve with the National Guard and Reserve or compete for selection to active duty commissioned officer assignments
