1. Understand the Most Common Munitions (Shells)
Now that you know some of the artillery basics, it is time to plan them into tactical scenarios. Not only must you pick the right type of artillery but you also need to consider the munition they carry. Each shell has different characteristics that you must consider. For the purpose of this lesson, we will stick to some of the more common effects delivered by artillery:
- Phosphorus - used to create smoke so you can mark a target or possibly obscure your movements from the enemy
- High explosive - used to destroy and damage targets
- Cluster munition which destroys targets with dozens of smaller exploding bombs. (Cluster munitions are only available on the howitzer shells)

2. Understand the Planning Factors
Leaders have a great deal to consider. First and foremost is your mission - but how do you best accomplish it? - Protect my own troops? - Avoid killing and hurting innocent people? - Destroying the enemy? - Creating negative media attention? - Using the least force necessary? - Getting the biggest effect possible? - Using all the assets at my disposal? - Supporting the greater mission? |

4. Watch the Video and All Respond to the Forum
Watch the first 7:20 of this video. You will see the some young leaders wrestling with how to engage an enemy on a crowded and confusing battlefield. The Marines get shot at and shelled, have to find the bad guys and pick the proper munitions and method of engagement. They have to protect themselves but avoid making new enemies by blowing things up indiscriminately. How did they do? What would you have done differently?
